Sandy Smith, ghillie at Phones flagged me down yesterday before handing over a little parcel. Inside was a recently dead 8 inch trout which Sandy has found on the riverbank.
It wasn’t hard to see the cause of death, it had a red plastic ring around its head. Closer examination found it to be a similar to the ring left on a plastic drinks bottle once the top is removed.
The ring was easily removed by hand but I suppose its not so easy for a trout to free itself.
We can only speculate as to how the trout ended up with its head through a plastic ring, maybe it was purely accidental, or maybe the result of inquisitive play? Do trout play with objects in the same way that we have seen wild dolphins? We will never know but it does highlight, if only in a small way, the damage that litter can do to the environment and the animals that live within it.
