Spey Opening 2016

Interim Report, a fuller report will follow on Sunday.

Well that’s another opening day over. There were two fish caught, both from Delfur and both by Mr Graham Ritchie from Fraserburgh. He caught the first fish of the day from Broom in the morning, estimated at 7lbs. In the afternoon he was in Beaufort and had another this time slightly larger fish at 8lbs. He followed this with a Rawner . On both occasions he was ably assisted by Gillie, Rory Patterson.

After a stewards enquiry it was decided to award both prizes to Graham and Rory. The anniversary Quaich for the first fish and then the prize for the second (heaviest) fish. I cannot recall any other time an angler being fortunate enough to catch two fish on opening day on the fly. If any of the more experienced anglers or gillies can remember such a feat I would be grateful if the will let me know.

I have been promised a selection of photographs of Graham with his fish but considering that Graham and Rory have four bottles of whisky to get through it might be a day or two before they materialise.
