‘Pancakes’ on the Spey
Last year the River Dee Trust reported ice pancakes at Lummels Pool and yesterday there were floating pancakes on the Spey, just below Penny Bridge in Aberlour.
Pancake ice is most common in cold oceans, frequently seen around Antarctica and the Baltic Sea. It can also be found in swirling river currents created from the the ‘grue’ (half-liquid snow or ice floating on the surface of a river) which then freezes overnight as temperatures drop.
