The river had dropped an inch overnight so we didn’t expect a big catch this morning. As this was the first night with the two traps running we were intrigued to see which would produce the most fish. Today the 4′ diameter and outer trap was the most productive but only just. It had caught 22 fish, including 2 trout with 20 fish in the 6′ trap. Very pleasing – our objective of doubling the trapping capability had been achieved.
There were more salmon in the 90-100mm size this morning in comparison to yesterday when the fish were mainly larger smolts.
No previously marked fish today so the first mark/recapture trial is still on 1.5% recovery rate. Today we marked 41 fish (one was too small) with a ventral mark and released them back upstream at the same site just downstream of the A95 road bridge. Hopefully we will see a few in the traps over the next day or two.
As we left the site we could see that one of the Ballindalloch rods was into a fish in the Junction Pool. Expertly netted by the ghillie it was good to see smiling faces all round!
