The two most recent recruits to the Spey Fishery Board, Sally Worsdall and myself completed a one day canoe training course today. The fishery board has found that canoeing is one of the most effective ways of carrying out bird counts on the river so the training will be put to good use.
The training was supplied by Dave Craig of Spirit of the Spey. Dave proved to be an excellent coach and although we were initially slightly bamboozled by the range of paddle strokes available it all came together nicely once out on the river. The river trip started at Tulchan and ended at Tamdhu. Included was the fearsome “washing machine” rapid at Ballindalloch but thankfully we emerged at the bottom after having experienced the quick rinse cycle only and not the spin!
In keeping with the company name we even managed to stop for a taste of proper Spey spirit with one of the Spey ghillies, cheers!
