Avon smolt trap update

Another busy day today with 849 salmon smolts and 35 trout in the traps. The total captured so far is now over 10,600 with a big day expected tomorrow. The Avon rose throughout the day but steadied at 26.5cm this evening. With other activities today we only marked and released 100 smolts back upstream, just in case the Avon rose significantly. That turned out not to be the case but we don’t want to miss an opportunity to assess the recapture rate in higher river levels.

This morning we had the pleasure of the company of Sean Dugan from the SFCC. He came along to shoot some shots for a training video on smolt trapping; we look forward to seeing the results as Sean produces some excellent video clips.

The graph below shows the catch in each of the traps.

Daily catch in the 4' and 4'Avon traps. It can be seen that there are days when the catch in both traps are comparable but other period when the 6' trap has comprehensively outfished the smaller trap

A higher proportion of the trout captured now are showing signs of smolting but their numbers haven’t increased much yet.
