Avon smolt hybrid

The rain showers yesterday did little to lift the Avon; it was only 1cm higher and catches in the traps declined over the weekend. On Saturday we had three recaptures from those marked on Friday with no more since. The recapture rate was a more satisfactory 7.3%, a lot higher than the first trial. This morning there were only 11 smolts in total, too few to mark.

One of the smolts this morning looked like a classic trout/salmon hybrid. We encounter these fish not infrequently whilst electrofishing but they are rarely reported as adults?

The upper fish looks like a hybrid. The head and tail of a salmon with the body of a trout. The fin colouration and markings and the thickness of the wrist were very trouty.

The lower fish was a typical lean salmon smolt. Note the nice new paint on the measuring board – a better background for photos.
