I wasn’t out yesterday but the team completed more sites on the Avon ending upstream of Tomintoul. Fry numbers are declining but the average per minute from the six sites surveyed yesterday was almost 22, with 10.2 parr per minute from the same sites. So far the mean number of fry per minute from the Avon is 32.2 (21.2 from the Spey sites, although this figure includes the 7 sites above Spey Dam where there were no fry) and the parr 13.3 per minute compared to 4 from the Spey sites. The habitat in the Avon is superb for parr and it is good to find it well stocked.
The average size of the fry is also declining, at two sites the mean size was below 40mm; what size will they be at the top of the river? We will hopefully find out by the end of the week as we have been given access by the estate to survey the remainder of the Avon mainstem; very good of them during one of the busiest times in the game shooting year. Looking forward very much to the next two days but must remember to take the custom made smaller anode ring for the electrofisher!
