The Spey Catchment Steering Group consisting of representatives of the Spey Fishery Board, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Highland and Moray Councils launched a “River Works Code” for the Spey in August 2002.The Code provides guidance for anyone contemplating work in or near the Spey and its tributaries along with details of who to contact for advice. The Code seeks to ensure that any work undertaken will assess the potential impact on neighbouring property, plants, animals and habitats within the river.

The Spey Fishery Board should always be consulted before any river works are carried out, with the exception of emergencies. This will help to speed up the process of seeking necessary clearance from the other statutory bodies.
