Current projects
The Spey Fishery Board is involved in a broad range of activities, including
- A hatchery operation, currently producing circa 250,000 salmon fry for release into areas above impassable man-made obstructions using parental broodstock from as close to the target stocking area as possible.
- Water Bailiffing to protect the River Spey’s stocks of Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout from illegal fishing (poaching).
- Removal of obstacles that prevent fish passage.
- Habitat improvement, including fencing, soft engineering and chainsaw operations.
- Predator Control, including Sawbill Ducks and Cormorants and participation in the Moray Firth Seal Management Plan.
- Pollution Reporting
- Water Abstraction & enhancing the Upper Spey
- Core Paths, River Access and Canoeing
- Control of Ranunculus and other non-native invasive species
- Determining salmon population structure through the genetic markers (FASMOP)
- Rivers And Fisheries Trusts of Scotland, Fishery Management Planning Liaison Group & the Association of Salmon Fishery Boards
- River Works Consultations
- Spey Catchment Management Plan and liaison with other agencies
